About Play Darbuka
For the love of darbuka.
We love this instrument. We built Play Darbuka to be the definitive place to learn it, practise it and make it your own.
Our story
The place we wished existed.
When we wanted to learn darbuka, we kept finding pieces of the puzzle: a lesson in English, a demonstration in Arabic, a Turkish technique video, a Spanish rhythm guide, a passage in an old book. There was so much to discover, but it was scattered across languages, platforms and pages.
We wanted one place we could keep coming back to. Somewhere to connect the lessons, understand the rhythms and put what we learned into practice. That’s why we created Play Darbuka.
Our purpose
Helping you learn. Helping you master.
Our aim is simple: to help more people learn and master darbuka. Whether you’re finding your first Dum or refining a technique you’ve played for years, we want to help you take the next step.
Here, rhythm guides, lessons from teachers, articles and interactive practice tools come together. You can explore the instrument and its traditions, hear how a rhythm works, then slow it down and play along.
The teachers, players and traditions behind this music are at the heart of what we share. We credit our sources and link to their work so you can keep exploring.
Your next rhythm starts here.
Start with the strokes, explore a rhythm or settle into a practice session. We hope this becomes a place you return to as your playing grows.
