How to change a darbuka skin.
Measure for a compatible head, replace the skin step by step and tune for a clear, balanced sound.
Changing a darbuka skin is manageable when the drum has a removable head held by tuning bolts. The job is to seat the replacement squarely, bring up tension gradually and listen as you go. This guide covers synthetic heads on metal darbukas; check your maker’s instructions for the particular drum and replacement.
Check the head and prepare
First check how the head is attached. A plastic head held by a metal rim and tuning bolts can be removed and replaced. Glued or rope-mounted natural skins need a different process, especially on a clay shell. Ask a maker or repairer experienced with that construction about reheading it. A tear, puncture or permanent distortion is a reason to replace a head. A dull sound alone is not: try a careful retune first if the head and fittings are intact. Order by the maker’s model and specified replacement-head size. The decorative outside rim and the head’s playing diameter are different measurements; a “22 cm” label alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm the fit with the supplier if the model is unknown. [2]Gawharet El Fan · Head compatibility and skin care (English)gawharetelfan.com
To check an unknown size, remove the old head using the loosening sequence below before measuring. Measure the inner diameter of the metal hoop on the underside: straight across the centre, from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. Start at the ruler’s zero mark and leave the hoop’s thickness out of the measurement. Confirm the supplier’s sizing convention, collar height and model compatibility before ordering. Measure the removed head across the centre, inside edge to inside edge. Check collar height and model compatibility separately. Original Practice Lab diagram; schematic, not to scale.
Have the compatible head, a correctly fitting tuning key or Allen key, a dry soft cloth, a padded work surface and a small tray for bolts and washers ready. Photograph the rim and fittings before dismantling them so you can return each part to its original position. Work by hand, with the drum supported securely.
Remove the old skin and seat the new one
1. Release the tension. Loosen each bolt a little, then move across to the opposite side. Repeat until the whole head is slack before removing any bolts completely. [6]Omar Kattan · Replacing, tuning and comparing darbuka skins (English)youtube.com
2. Lift and inspect. Keep the bolts and washers together, lift off the retaining rim and remove the old head. Wipe the seating surface and underside of the rim with the dry cloth, and check for roughness. If you find a sharp burr, bent rim or damaged thread, have it corrected before fitting the new skin. 3. Seat and align. Place the new head centrally on its seat and replace the rim in its original orientation. Start every bolt gently by hand, keeping the washers in place. The rim should sit level and the bolts should engage freely. If anything needs force to line up, lift it off and check the fit again. Bring up the tension and listen
4. Tighten across the drum. Once all bolts are engaged, take up the slack gently in opposite pairs, keeping the rim level. Then use small turns, about a quarter-turn or less per bolt, and complete a pass before reassessing. Avoid bringing one bolt to full tension while the others are loose. 5. Tune for a clear response. Play gentle Tek and Ka strokes, then check the Dum. Aim for a clear high note and a full low note at comfortable hand pressure. If the drum sounds choked, ease the tension back a little across the bolts; if it is too loose, bring it up gradually. Keep checking the rim’s level. There is no single target pitch for every size and head. [8]Gawharet El Fan · Tuning a metal darbuka (English)gawharetelfan.com
6. Recheck after settling. A fresh head may need another small adjustment. Check the tuning again the following day and before your next practice session. Follow the head maker’s settling instructions; avoid adding extra tension just to “stretch it in”. [7]Donizetti · Darbuka derisi değiştirme: fitting a new head (Turkish)donizettidarbuka.com
Some percussionists use a hairdryer to help a new synthetic head settle. Excessive heat can damage the skin, so check the head maker’s guidance before applying heat and avoid prolonged or concentrated heating. Check your result
If the result is uneven, stop and check the fitting before tightening further. These checks help separate a seating problem from a tuning adjustment: [8]Gawharet El Fan · Tuning a metal darbuka (English)gawharetelfan.com[2]Gawharet El Fan · Head compatibility and skin care (English)gawharetelfan.com
| What you notice | Next check |
|---|---|
| The rim sits at an angle | Release tension gradually across the drum, centre the head and reseat the rim. |
| A bolt binds or will not engage | Back it out and check alignment and threads; do not use the key to force it in. |
| Tek is dull or Dum is choked | Check whether tension is too low or too high, and make small, even adjustments. |
| Uneven sound persists with a level rim | Recheck head compatibility and condition; ask a repairer if the cause is unclear. |
Once the tuning holds, play a slow Dum–Tek–Ka phrase and a few bars of Maksum. Use relaxed strokes and similar effort for each comparison. Listen for a reliable response from both hands. A short recording now gives you something useful to compare with after the head has settled.
