Musical context

  • Folk & social dance

Salsa grew through Caribbean musical traditions and New York’s Latin communities. These studies explore son clave, conga tumbao, bongó martillo, cáscara and campaneo; Salsa names a musical family rather than one fixed drum pattern. [3][1]

Count four quarter-note beats per bar. Son clave spans two bars: 2–3 and 3–2 describe which half comes first. The main tumbao strokes and accompaniment reverse with that direction; ghost-note sticking follows the supplied practice patterns. [1]

Dahola follows bass-tumbao attacks. Bendir and riq share clave, conga and timekeeping roles according to the study; in Mambo, riq carries the campaneo bell rhythm. Optional sagats add cáscara or a lighter pulse. These are percussion adaptations; the bass pitches, sustained notes and original instrument techniques are not reproduced. Bendir and sagats start muted; enable them for the full ensemble. [1]

Tumbao, martillo and mambo offer complementary ensemble parts. Son clave and cáscara have studies in both directions; the two-bar accompaniment follows each change of clave. [1][2][3]
